An often unasked question should be the starting point of installing Medscribbler:

» Issue: Handwriting recognition is poor

When using the Writing Pad or otherwise inputting text by handwriting with the Pen and having the Tablet PC convert the input to typed text, the handwriting recognition is unexpectedly poor.

NOTE: While handwriting recognition has limits and cannot be expected to be perfect, an unusually high incidence of errors can indicate a correctable issue.

Cause: Writing in block letters

The user is writing in all capitals in block letters. Using all uppercase letters can result in poor handwriting recognition.

Resolution: Use mixture of upper and lower case

When using a printing style of lettering with the handwriting features of the Tablet PC, use a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters. Using all uppercase letters (also called all caps or block lettering) can result in poor handwriting recognition.

Cause: No medical user dictionary installed

Add medical terms to the tablet's dictionary. See the Medscribbler installation screen for an included dictionary.

» How do I adjust ink writing thickness?

A user can adjust the thickness of the ink that is drawn on the screen in Medscribbler. To make this selection, do the following:

  • Go to the client (medical personnel)
  • Open the Configuration
  • Go to Settings then Environment and Pen Settings.

Various tablets provide various results. A test pad is provide to help you chose the best setting.

» How do I add medical words to dictionary?

New medical words can be added to the user dictionary. A new word can be an acronym, a proper name, or a specialized item that is used often. Adding new words can improve handwriting recognition and speed up the conversion process.

To add a word to the dictionary, do the following:

  • On the [Tools] menu of the Input Panel, tap [Text Preview].
  • Tap in the text preview pane, then enter text using the Writing Pad or the soft keyboard.
  • In the text preview pane, select the word that is to be added to the dictionary.
  • Point to the symbol that appears, then tap the down arrow.
  • Tap [Add (word) to Dictionary].
  • If [Add (word) to Dictionary] is not in the alternate list, then the word is already in the dictionary.

To add a list of words use the dictionary Power tool included in the Medscribbler installation. Duplicate words will be ignored. Adding a large number of words may slow some Tablet PC's performance.
