VPN IntroductionMedscribbler is a client server application, giving it the robustness and ability to securely connect multiple clinics or give access to users at home. This is done by setting up a virtual private network (VPN). While the set-up and management of Medscribbler should be done by a Microsoft Certified Professional or a Medscribbler Support Professional, some may want to understand the technology themselves. A VPN is a private network created over a public one. It's done with encryption. This way your data is encapsulated and secure in transit, creating a "virtual" tunnel. A VPN is a method of connecting to a private network through a public network like the Internet. An Internet connection at a company is common. An Internet connection at home is common too. With both of these you could create an encrypted tunnel between them and pass information safely and securely. These instructions assume static IP addresses that have been assigned by your Internet Service provider (ISP). A static IP for a business is common but homes usually have a dynamic IP. You can obtain a static IP from your ISP (for a fee) or use one of the many Internet DNS Services, many of which are free for a home user. For more information on IP addresses or DNS contact your Microsoft Certified Professional or a Medscribbler Support Professional. Before you begin to create a connection from a remote location to your Medscribbler server, you should be able to answer the following questions: - Are your Internet connections dynamic or static?
- What is your Server name and what is its IP address?
- Does my network router permit VPN pass through and port setting?
- What firewalls are on my computers and how do I configure them?
- What are the user names on the client computers wanting to connect?
These instructions assume both the Medscribbler Server and Client are using Microsoft Windows XP (Windows 2000 is slightly different) Note: Windows XP is limited to only ONE simultaneous incoming VPN-connection. If you require more than one user connected at a time, the VPN server would have to be Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Server or a non-Microsoft VPN product.
